Quality Improvement
I initially learnt to run searches as a way to avoid bothering my admin colleagues with the highly specific searches I wanted to run.
The clinical reporting function has since become an addiction and now I regularly run searches to see where else there may be potential for a project.
Statin Project
The points scoring system used to measure QOF outcomes can be a long struggle followed by an annual mad dash; some domains, such as childhood vaccinations, can never meet requirements in our population in Harlow no ,after what the surgery tries.
I noticed an area where we were sitting at the lower end of the point threshold percentage. I taught myself how to create a search and construct a batch questionnaire. By the time I was finished we had dramatically improved in our percentage score.
To know that I have done something which improved patient care and also potentially brought in money to the surgery has been immensely satisfying.

HRT
In 2026 I plan on gaining my BMS Management of the Menopause Certificate with a view to then taking the Advanced Certificate in Menopause Care.
I am very interested in menopause care; For this reason, I decided to run some searches to see how compliant my practice was with HRT guidance.

Teaching Quality Improvement
Once I knew how easy it was I was keen to impart my knowledge on the other doctors at our surgery.
I lead a teaching session where, as a group we, built this search about long term prednisolone use and bone protection.
The resulting patient list can now be contacted by batch message by one of our registrars seeking a QIP. It is a very short patient list which is fortunate as the information regarding Alendronic Acid often takes more than an accurx to communicate.
